Gender: female

Ruth has the power to change the density of other objects, although this actually follows the laws of physics. If she makes something very, very dense it will shrink accordingly. If she makes something very, very un-dense, it will spread out in size. Some uses of this power includes the ability to get rid of bullets—all she has to do is focus her power on them and the molecules are too widely spaced out to do any harm—walk through walls, and make people drop things.

PERSONALITY: Ruth is…well, not tactful. More blunt. She’ll say exactly what’s on her mind, without thinking of how it would affect the situation first. She’s also a terrible liar, so it’s a good thing her parents know she does the occasional mask run. Ruth is also a very loyal, protective girl. If you’re her friend, you’re her friend for ever and always. And Ruth looks after her friends. She’s not as good with her powers as she could be, because of her confidence issues, but she has potential. Ruth likes running because it helps get her mind off things; ditto with playing the cello. She is bisexual, although she leans more towards other girls.

HISTORY:
So, one fine summer day, Kitty Pryde (aka Shadowcat) married Peter Rasputin (aka Colossus). (Because this RPGer ships hopelessly.) At this point, they were semi-retired from the X-Men—called in only for true, world-shattering emergencies. Eventually, there was a child—Ruth Salome Pryde-Rasputin. They were careful when she was growing up, and when her mutation appeared, Kitty and Peter were extremely supportive of her. They moved closer to the Institute when Ruth manifested her powers, though, and eventually sent her there as a day student.
Ruth was a fairly normal girl, although on her report card the teacher comments consistently reported that she would do much better if she could only have some confidence in herself. She took up running track when she was thirteen, although the Institute’s track program was mainly for the students with some form of super speed. Ruth wasn’t the best runner on the team, but she was pretty good and she kept at it. When she was fourteen, she took up playing the cello and got slowly better at it. (You can just about tolerate her playing now…kidding, kidding! She’s really pretty good.)
When Ruth was sixteen, she had a brief relationship with Susanna, a girl who lived across the street from her. However, Susanna’s parents didn’t approve of this relationship and they mutually decided to end it because of the stress. (Not that Ruth wasn’t crying for days after or didn’t take a hit to her self-confidence.) She also went out with another Institute student, Marcus Williams, but that didn’t work out either. She also entered and won fourth place in a cello contest at Juilliard.

POST RP EXAMPLE:(From TIMH)
"And you'll be there for the meet?" Vasilissa Morevna's voice crackled and popped out of Maria’s cell phone; the reception where she was was utterly terrible.
“Yes, Mama,” said Maria, smiling. “When I have ever missed a meet?”
“Well, there was that time when you were still a college sophomore—”
“Mama, that was because I got mugged. I’ll be there, okay? Love ya.” ("Mugged" was family shorthand for being attacked by a sperm whale, mainly because it was almost identical to the human version. Although human muggers didn't generally try to eat their prey.)
“I love you too. Be there.”
“Yes, Mama.” Maria flipped her phone shut and put it back in the pocket of her jacket. It was a nice day for a walk, she had a decent amount of cash that wasn’t actually going to go towards the rent or paying off her student loans or buying groceries, it wasn't too cold out here, and her shift didn’t start for another three hours.
Oh, yeah. Life was good.
She walked down the street, a spring in her step, when she heard this: “…don’t play with pretend doggies…”
Oh, dear. Maria looked in the direction the words had come from. A tall, dark-haired man with a dog. Another man with reddish hair and a curiously childlike expression. O-kaaaay. Pretend doggies? This couldn’t be good…
The dog seemed to really like the red-haired guy. In the same way squids—well, only giant squids—seemed to really like Maria and her family. Shapeshifter? Well, probably. Could be he just had a doggie treat on him or something.
But even so, Maria directed her steps towards the two guys and the dog. It would be nice to know people besides her own family who she could commiserate with about the annoyances of the mass-changes inherent in shapeshifting.
“Hey,” said Maria, smiling widely. “What’s up?”
