Kim was standing at the counter staring at the clock on the wall. It said she had an hour and a half left of her shift, and she really didn’t know if she wanted it to hurry up and get over with or drag on. One, her current boyfriend had really done a number on her before she left for work, and she was surprised that her makeup had covered up the bruises on her face from where he gave her one hell of a beating. She knew he would be in the same mood when she returned from work. On the other hand, the clientele of the dinner that day were of the rowdy, grabby type of men. She swore her rear was numb from all the rump slapping and pinching. ”Hey sugar! The group at table three wants another round of coffee!” The waitress behind the counter hollered at her, and sighed as she grabbed the pot and walked over there.
She knew that they just wanted to put their grubby hands on her, and she grunted her teeth as she poured their requested coffee. She felt them place their hands on her, and knew that if she swatted them away she wouldn’t get much of tip. She straightened up and turned to walk away before they spoke. ”Hey baby, what do you say that the four of us and you go to a hotel or something?” They taunted her, and she shook her head no refusing them. She heard the bell over the door ring to alert her that someone else had just entered. She tried to back away, and the men just got to their feet to stop her retreat. She didn’t want to stay there anymore, nor did she want to go home to get another beating. She didn’t know what else to do…

Luke didn't know why he had chosen to go to New York today but he just felt that there was something important about today. He had not had the best week, his aunt Jen was trying to get him to act like a normal 25 year old but the truth was he wasn’t he was also the hulk, it was hard being both and there was actually no way to be both without it majorly sucking. Not that her heart wasn’t in the right place, everyone knew that it was but there was just no way that he would try and be a normal guy simply because he wasn’t a normal guy no matter how hard her tried to be a normal guy. When he had gotten to New York he decided that he had to get something to eat rather than go around looking for something on an empty stomach.
However when he entered the diner he had to struggle hard to keep his emotions in check when he saw the way that 4 guys where seemingly pawing a young waitress, Luke had never been one to see someone else in a situation like this but more to the point there was something familiar about her that he couldn’t shake, something that he felt that he as a ‘hero’ had to protect, more to the point there was just something about her that stuck out in his mind that would not allow him to see her be hurt.
“How about you back off and you might be able to still go home and have your 4 way love fest with out the lady.” He said standing in front of her unzipping his jacket and putting it down, leaving him in a extremely old avengers t shirt that use to be his father’s. “because I think she is saying no, and the way I see it, you touch her again the part you touch her with, I will break off.”

Kim was trying her best to wiggle out of the box that her group of four customers had created around her, blocking any chance of her escaping. She looked to first the older waitress behind the counter, who just stood there thinking that is was a joke on their part. She knew differently, and then saw the cook only laugh at her predicament. She kept giving her customers sign that told them no, but they just couldn’t get the hint and leave her alone. Then before she knew it, one of them reached for her to keep her there and raised their hand as if to strike her. She automatically closed her eyes as childhood memories surfaced, and waited on the hit that never came. When she ventured her eyes open, a new customer was standing between her and the group.
“How about you back off and you might be able to still go home and have your 4 way love fest with out the lady. Because I think she is saying no, and the way I see it, you touch her again the part you touch her with, I will break off.”
Her face suddenly showed a hope she hasn’t felt in years as she heard his voice. She knew that voice, and her heart tried to escape her chest because of it. She watched as he took off his jacket, and showed his very well formed arms. She couldn’t help herself as her hand immediately reached out and touched one. ”L…Luke, is that you?” She asked in such a way that said she was glad he was there, but she couldn’t quite believe it. She didn’t care about the group of guys any more, nor did she worry about her boyfriend either…

Luke was getting ready for a fight, a fight which he knew that he could win but a fight all the same, after all it was going to be a 4 on 1 brawl which they would think didn't give him much of a chance, however he had the Hulk as a partner so to speak, if he got them outside he could turn into the monster that was feared all around America, but he would do it to keep this woman safe, if there was one thing that he had come to despise over the years it was men that hit women, he didn't know where that had came from in his life but he would never hit a woman himself and therefore he wouldn’t expect anyone else to either, after all even without being the hulk he was a large powerful man that could cause injury to most men, he wouldn’t dare raise a hand to a woman whether he cared about her or not because of the simple fact of, he didn’t think it was right to actually strike a woman.
As he went to move however he felt a hand on his arm, as the girl spoke. The voice had a calming effect on Luke, he didn't know why but there was something about the fact that this girl was ok that he wasn’t going to pound these guys bones into purified liquid or dust, he didn't know what it was but for some reason he actually cared for this woman and wanted to ensure her safety, for some reason. Looking around at her and properly looking at her for the first time he was surprised at what he saw. Even thought 5 years at passed since he had seen her face to face there was no denying that it was Kim, the small blonde who had lived next door to him when he had been growing up. “you ok?” he asked reaching out to cup her face. “did they hurt you?”

Kim couldn’t believe her luck. Just when her horrible day was about to go from bad to worse, the one person that she actually ever felt safe with had stepped into her workplace. She no longer felt frightened, and in danger but for some odd reason she did feel like telling her boss screw it and leave. She even felt like going home and leaving her boyfriend behind, but she shook her head to rid herself of such thoughts. Instead she concentrated on trying to keep the shamble of a life she had pieced together. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath and opened them, as if she was trying to see if she was dreaming again. He was still there, and not vanished into nothingness. She could feel the tension in his body as she felt him get ready for the upcoming fight, and she smiled to herself at the so unbalanced fight. She knew who he had on his side, but strangely she wasn’t afraid of it.
“you ok? did they hurt you?”
She finally saw him as he turned to look at her. Her surprise matched his, even though she had already knew who it was that came to her rescue. She allowed him to reach out and cup her face, but her body remembered the beating in the five year gap of his absence and she flinched involuntarily. She the cringed in slight pain as his hand touched a pretty raw bruise on her cheek. ”No, they didn’t…yet. And I am, now that you are here.” She answered him, positive that he would notice her reaction to his gentle gestured. She was sure he was going to grill her about it, and she steeled herself for them.

As Luke touched her face he knew that there was something up in the way that she winced, not that he was going to ask her about it right now but he knew that where he had touched was sore, he didn't know why but it made him angry, the hulk side of his brain was practically roaring in anger and wanting to be released, when they had grown up the hulk part of his brain since his first transformation had wanted to protect Kim, almost like the monster cared for her, even though there had been times that Luke had been able to control hulk it had been more when Kim had been next door that he had been able to control the monster, he fought to stay in control for if she ever needed him.
Luke moved his hand from her face and looked around the room, the four guys had seemingly been taken by a different waitress who was apologising profusely for what had happened with Luke who was still gearing himself for a fight and would have ripped their heads off if Kim asked them to. Looking around he found one that seemingly looked like he was the manager. “She is taking a break.” He said before leading Kim away before anyone could argue with him. Once they where away from the group of people he stopped deciding he would get the biggest question in his mind out of the way. “You wanna tell me why your face hurts?”

Kim knew she was going to have to tell Luke what happened before she got ready for her shift today, and what scared her the most is that she actually wanted to see her boyfriend hurt. However, she also knew that there was a chance that Luke’s “friend” could show up too and leave his impression as well. She of course cringed at that thought. But when the two of them were growing up, she found that she could never lie to him. Even if it meant telling him that her father had broken her leg and told her to clean up and ready the house for company. Her own father had refused to take her to the emergency room, but Luke’s family had. Before she knew what had happen, he removed his hand and looked around.
The older waitress that had been behind the counter was now taking over the group of men and apologizing for Luke’s behavior. She felt her temper rise at that thought. She knew that he was only protecting her, just like he had as kids. So the old bat didn’t have the right to apologize for him, nor her. She however grounded her teeth in reaction to that. Next thing she knew was that he told the manager that she was taking her break, and then led her away from everyone.
“You wanna tell me why your face hurts?”
Kim looked into his eyes for a long moment, knowing that she was about to make him very angry. When she was ready to talk, she diverted her eyes and looked away from him. Instead of talking first, she took a nearby napkin and rubbed the concealer off her cheek exposing a rather nasty looking bruise. ”My boyfriend and I had an argument before I came to work…” She finally said, knowing he would figure out the rest.

Luke couldn’t help the growl that escaped his throat when he saw the bruise that was on the beautiful face of Kim, he had seen her for the majority of their childhood, the fact that he had pretty much been her protector for the most of their young lives, therefore he did everything and anything that he could to keep her safe, when there was a chance of their being an injury to her he would always protect her, his father had been worried about him getting close to her because of the Hulk side of himself which could have potentially hurt her, however Luke didn't care what the risks where, he had made sure that she always knew that he would protect her if he was around, now he felt tremendously bad that he had not been around when she had needed him to be so.
Touching her cheek he knew that his eyes would have darkened to the dark green that they became whenever he transformed into the Hulk, that was always the first thing that would change, his eye colour, after that he didn't have the best look of controlling his transformation, however he knew that he would have to in case Kim didn’t remember his ‘friend’ as it had been over 5 years since he had seen her. “Do you... argue with him often?” he said his eyes struggling to stay one colour.

Kim was a bit surprised to hear Luke growl, but of course she wasn’t frightened. However, she knew she shouldn’t show him the other injuries as some of them were much worse. She even knew that once he saw them, he would only get mad and guilty for leaving her five years ago. She did not want him to feel that way, and so she kept her mouth shut. Something she was good at with other people, all thanks to her dear old dad. She didn’t want him to worry, and possibly let his ‘friend’ have control. Even if her heart knew that his ‘friend’ wouldn’t hurt her…
”Do you… argue with him often?”
She had noticed that his eyes changed from their blue to a much more dark green. She knew what that meant, and lifted her hand to cover his where it touched her cheek. She felt safe once again, and she didn’t want that feeling to ever go away. She closed her eyes, letting that feeling fill her up for a few moments. Until he asked his question, and she opened them staring into his own color changing eyes. She knew he was struggling for control. ”It is alright, Luke. I remember your ‘friend’. He is kind of hard to forget. And yes… we do argue… often.” She finally told him, suddenly feeling very scared for her boyfriend.

Luke felt the green in his eyes solidify now, hulk wanted out and the monster wanted out now, he wanted to hunt this guy down and beat him to a bloody pulp how dare anyone raise a hand to his Kim. Luke’s brain stopped at this, since when had she been his Kim? They had been friends but he had been gone for 5 years, completely gone from his life he was just happy for her to be able to remember him, from what he could tell he was lucky that she had a memory at all by the way that she had been arguing / been beaten by her boyfriend. There was no way that he was going to allow that to continue at all. However he was still dwelling on the fact that he saw her as his, he knew that it probably wasn’t true but he would not argue with the Hulk side of his brain as he didn't want it to turn feral, as when the Hulk brain got angrier not even Kim was safe.
However the Hulk side of his brain seemed to be quite content touching her, even though it was on her cheek there was something about her that to him was comforting, almost like a warm day in summer or a relief that everything was going to be ok. The fact that she was safe even though she had been beaten, the fact that his grandfather hadn’t used her against him was something that he would be continuously be thankful for. “How about you come with me?” he said “I am going back to Texas tonight to live with Aunt Jen, you wanna blow this craptacular town?”

Kim watched as his eyes turned solid green, and knew that his ‘friend’ wanted to come out and play. And of course, she was strangely happy that he did. Not once did his ‘friend’ ever hurt her, just like he had as well. She then wondered why she kept finding herself with abusive, rotten men when she had found one that would move the heavens it seems to keep her safe. Heck, he might be able to move the heavens if he got excited enough. She smiled at that thought, and suddenly had the urge to go home and tell her boyfriend to shove it. She was leaving him, for Luke and there was nothing he could do to stop her. She was seriously thinking about quitting her job as well, as she felt like she didn’t deserve the men pawing at her as well.
”How about you come with me? I am going back to Texas tonight to live with Aunt Jen, you wanna blow this craptcular town?”
She truly smiled at him for the first time in five years. She couldn’t stop herself as she closed the distance between them and wrapped her arms around him, like she had done when he found her crying after one of her father’s moods. ”Yes. But first we have to make a stop. I have to pack some clothes.” She told him resting her head against his chest, before stepping back and peering around him. ”Hey, Donna Jo, I quit!” She shouted at the old bat who had taken over her table, and then tossed her waist apron at the lady.
Kim then turned her attention back to Luke, took his hand in hers before leading him out of the dinner and then to her shared apartment. Which was surprisingly right up the block. She then led him up the building to her apartment, before opening it to see it dark inside. She paused in fear once more, as she knew her boyfriend was inside in a beating mood. She tried to be quiet as she entered and motioned for Luke to follow her. She didn’t even get past the living room before her face met a very familiar fist. She fell backwards, hoping Luke was there to catch her.

Luke felt the hulk calm down in his chest when Kim rested her head on his chest, there was something about her that seemed to always calm the hulk, just like he protected her, she calmed him the amount of times that he had wanted to pound her father into dust for hurting her normally was stopped by him holding her crying body in her arms as he assured her that everything would be ok, it seemed that as soon as he had her in his arms not only was he able to calm her but at the same time she was able to calm the hulk for some reason. Luke grinned when she told her boss that she was quitting and lead him away, secretly he had wanted to beat the crap out of the guys who had pawed at her but he would settle for killing her abusive boyfriend instead, after all he understood sometimes guys could go a bit far but that was no excuse for being handsy in a diner, however that was super seeded by the anger that he had for her boyfriend.
When they entered the block however he could see that Kim was nervous, obviously the fact that that guy who had made her life hell was in the room behind that door, he just hoped that she would be able to leave him and not end up staying with him because of the fact that he didn't want to lose her again even though the first time it had been that they had drifted apart, this time he would not allow her to be taken from him. When he saw her get punched he caught her with ease before turning and putting her on a chair before he began to change into the hulk,
“Bad move,” he said as he grew turning green. “man hurt Kim, Hulk break man.”

Kim was of course carried across the room by none other than Luke. She was actually glad that he was there with her, or she was sure that she would be back in the hospital again. He sat her down in a chair, and she knew that he was angry and she suddenly felt sorry for the her boyfriend. She had a feeling that he was the one that was going to need an ambulance this time instead of her, and she smiled at the thought. She watched as her childhood friend’s eyes turned green, and his muscular structure began to increase. She felt like she had when he first defended her in her front yard when she was 13, and she didn’t feel scared one bit.
”Bad move, man hurt Kim, Hulk break man.”
She thought that this isn’t going to be good, and wondered if Luke’s grandfather would be far off when someone calls the cops. She remembered the general visiting her and her dad when Luke left five years ago, and attempted to get her to tell where he was. She couldn’t tell him as she didn’t even know, and when the general told them that Luke was dangerous she had gotten a rather bad beating from her father after the man left for associating with him. ”Luke, be careful. We don’t want the military here as well. Your grandfather will surely be if that happened…” She told him as she got up from the chair and placed her hand on his growing green arm.

Luke knew that Kim was right but at the same time Hulk wanted to pound the blood out of this man, how dare he touch Kim, no woman should have been hit by a man in Luke’s mind but in hulk’s it was damn near sacrilege especially when it was Kim, after all Hulk had been her protector for as long as Luke had, that was why Luke had allowed the Hulk to take over, unlike himself Hulk would not stop, Hulk had no human emotions such as guilt or remorse and was more than capable of killing a man than Luke who wasn’t particularly fond of the idea of killing.
When he felt Kim put her hand on his large arm surprisingly he even felt Hulk calm at her touch, that had not been something that he had expected, after all Hulk for his father had been a rabid animal most of the time and Luke had pretty much the same experience with the transformations, this one however seemed to be different, almost like just having Kim around had made it different. Slowly he began to decrease in size but hit the guy across the room with his arm while it was still hulk sized. “Get your stuff Kim.” He said before walking across and grabbing the guy by the scruff of his shirt. “you even try and find her again, and I will kill you, no second chances.” Then he dropped the man back down to the floor.

Kim watched as she managed to calm him down, and just like she had always known he wasn’t going to hurt her. It seemed that the press and media had gotten their information wrong on the Hulk. She had read that it had no human emotions except for rage, and could easily kill without a second thought. However she was not seeing the same person before her, she never did see that person that the media painted as a raging monster. She was never afraid of it, and knew that it would never hurt her on purpose. She wondered why the press had seemed so keen in turning the sweet boy from her childhood next door, into a monster that seemed unstoppable. Well, she had always seemed to make him pause while big and green, and she just couldn’t make the connection.
”Get your stuff Kim. you even try and find her again, and I will kill you, no second chances.”
Her eyes got wide as Luke’s huge green arm hit her boyfriend and sent him flying across the room. She watched as his landing left a large crater in the wall, and smirked to herself. He was going to feel that in a short bit. She nodded her head and dashed into their shared bedroom, and quickly packed a bag as she heard Luke threaten him with taking his life if he ever found her. She of course smiled at the thought of her boyfriend wanting to find her know. She knew that he must be reeling that his woman was leaving with someone like Luke, and she zipped up her bag and picked it up before exiting the bedroom. ”I’m ready, Luke.” She told him as she returned to his side, and glared at her boyfriend.
